New ways to listen to WCWM!

In celebration of getting WCWM added as an iTunes radio station, I thought I’d compile a list of ways to listen to WCWM online.  I’m probably forgetting some, but this should get you started.
1.  Pull up iTunes and look at the left hand navigation column.  In the “Library” section hit “Radio.”  Hit “College/University” and scroll down alphabetically to “WCWM 90.9 William & Mary Radio.”  Sweet.

2.  Look over to the left of this article.  See the little arrow thing?  It’s a music player, click that or the space ship in the …

What the hell is CMJ?

A few things set commercial radio and non-profit radio apart and one of those things is CMJ. The College Music Journal is the College Radio equivalent of Billboard, where stations like WCWM report their plays for the week. More importantly, every fall, the CMJ Marathon hits New York City with thousands of bands, panel discussions on radio and the music industry, and the general debauchery you would expect from a bunch of College Radio kids in Manhattan. It’s like MTV’s Spring Break for hipsters.
This year WCWM is sending some of its most professional student representatives to learn more about the radio and music industries, see new and upcoming independent musicians, wander around in the shadiest parts of Brooklyn, and hang out in dive bars. Check our style out:

Show of the Week: Baltimore Beatdown

The DJs of Baltimore Beatdown get more play than any other show on WCWM. That’s because these guys are so committed to their show that they wake up for an 8-10am show every weekday morning, on top of their normal Thursday 10-midnight time slot. T-Velvet (aka Thomas Kennedy) and Dapper Darius (aka Chris Yamoah) have been DJs since spring of 2008 and since then have built such a huge following that you can find them on twitter, facebook and this year, their website, www.beatdown.biz.

With the addition the morning time slots this year came a new addition to the team, DJ Geordi Laforge (aka Drew Laskowski, author of Vinyl Tap’s Weekend Mixtapes), who is far more willing to get up at 8am than a certain Mr. Yamoah. And Chris is not alone, I can’t do 8am…

Oh Sh*t: An Interview with F*ck Buttons

For those out of the loop, Fuck Buttons is a noise rock group whose sound has been described as “a soundtrack to the final party before the apocalypse.” Their debut album Street Horrrsing was heavily played last year here on WCWM, and the same is sure to come when their newest album, Tarot Sport, drops on October 20th. In preparation for the mass hysteria and unbridled joy that awaits the release of Tarot Sport, I recently did a short interview with the two masterminds behind Fuck Buttons, Benjamin John Power and Andrew Hung.
Your new material seems to be a lot more accessible, and even in some parts dance oriented. Was that a conscious shift or something that just came naturally?
Benjamin John Power: Choosing a direction, or a path to follow is something we would never consciously plan before we write new material.
Andrew Hung: I think I’d find it difficult to define accessibility in relation to us. I’d consider our music to still be pretty unpalatable for the…
