With each successive album, Thee Oh Sees ritually sacrifice part of their lo-fi sound to the God of Rock’n’Roll. It’s a familiar story in the annals of the Rock Band, as continued success and attention means that you can probably stop using that shitty microphone and pay someone else with high-end shit to do your recordings. Along with this monetary revelation come songs that sound a little more polished; are a little less scary; and may or may not be worse than what came before, but rarely (if ever) are better. All of this is not to say that no band has ever progressed in such a fashion without continuing to put out quality music. Thee Oh Sees, for whatever sacrifices they’ve made so far, are a testament to that fact.
