New Column: The Year in Music – 1967

Few years were more important in musical history than 1967. Best known for the Summer of Love, the year also saw debut albums from Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, and the Velvet Underground as well as memorable releases by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, and Aretha Franklin. Let’s Do Sixty-Nine: A Sex/Relationship Column

As much as I love reading the Flat Hat’s sex column (and hearing about what it’s like to be a hormonally-charged freshman boy, dying to masturbate but confused about how to get away with it while sharing a room) I thought music-lovers could use a little advice as well. But this column won’t just be about sex, I really want to talk about all those other things that go along with it. Every week, I’ll be looking at commitment, relationships, casual encounters, kissing, hook-ups and those “Oh-my-god-what-was-I-thinking” moments.
I’d like to start my column with a few words about one of my longest relationships. My love for the Magnetic Fields started in high school, when a friend introduced me to the first disc of 69 Love Songs. Through all of high school and college, through all my ups and downs and inside-outs, 69 Love Songs has been there. Even in the beginning we could finish each other’s sentences- we just clicked.
